Grande Dunes History

Grande Dunes was first conceptualized in the mid-1990’s by local development company, Burroughs & Chapin.  The idea was to bring an amazing upscale community, centered around golf, to the Myrtle Beach market. This community would introduce exquisite Mediterranean architecture, along with dazzling interiors in homes built by the region’s top custom homebuilders.  During this period the land that lay west of the Intracoastal Waterway was pine forests and lumber roads that bordered the protected area of the Carolina Bays Preserve.  There was no access, so the idea of the iconic Grande Dunes bridge was formed.  Not just a way to span the water, but an experience that truly gives a sense of arrival as you reach its peak.  Now, twenty plus years later, the community has grown from 2200 acres to 2600 acres and incorporates over 20 different neighborhoods.  Over the years the demand for more variety in architecture styles has brought in new builders that offer styles from Cape Dutch, to Low Country and Coastal Cottage homes.  The amazing amenity package originally designed for the community continues to set the bar for exceptional living and lifestyle.  The amenity offering covers a wide range of interests that appeal to a variety of owners in Grande Dunes.  At the centerpiece is the 25,000 square foot Ocean Club.  This oceanfront masterpiece includes resort-style water features, along with relaxed dining inside and poolside dining outside.  There is great meeting and entertainment space and of course, the private access to the beach and the provided beach chairs and umbrellas for owners.  In addition to the Ocean Club, the community has a deep-water, full service marina, two championship golf course, and a tournament-ready tennis facility.  Winding around and throughout the community are walking/biking trails culminating with the waterway trail; a truly unique experience.  Grande Dunes community has grown as one community, but with four distinct villages –

Ocean Village covers from the oceanfront west to Bypass 17 and has the Ocean Club as its central amenity.

Marina Village lays between the Intracoastal waterway and Bypass 17 with the Marina and Tennis facility as its main amenity.

Golf Village, the exclusively Mediterranean architecture and gated area of the community, rests west of the waterway, and as its name implies, offers the wonderful gold experiences as the main amenities.

North Village, Grande Dunes new village, finished out the north west corner of the community and offers a variety of home designs along with private, exclusive access.  North Village owners will have a central amenity all their own, along with full access to the Ocean Club.  New homes will be available here in 2023.

Throughout the development period of Grande Dunes, each developer has taken special care to enrich the community with new offerings and bring in more variety to appeal to a wider market.  Each area is masterfully designed and sets the bar for living in a true community with a mixture of custom, semi-custom and production-built homes and condos.  While the original vision has evolved over the 20 years of development the purpose of the community remains the same; to offer Myrtle Beach residential options not found elsewhere and to establish a community that elevates lifestyle choice for residents.
